- A
RECOMMENDED LIST
(click on links to find more titles)
CANAL CITY SOUVENIR - A guide book for the Birmingham Canal Navigations by Michael Pearson (canal companions) While not a canal companion (the maps are not as comprehensive as in the Stourport guide which covers the BCN I can wholeheartedly recommend the book as a general introduction and guide to the delights (and I mean that) of the BCN - especially at under a fiver!!
THAMES RING GUIDE Geo-projects guide to the ultimate two or three week ring (Grand Union, Oxford Canal and River Thames) A ring bound atlas rather than the usual folded maps
NICHOLSON'S
GUIDES: NEW MARCH 2000 EDITIONS NOW AVAILABLE
Recommended by British Waterways, this is a series of seven guide books
providing the most comprehensive coverage of the English and Welsh waterways.
The mapping is based upon Ordnance Survey maps and is supplemented by
information on waterside facilities, the history of each waterway, places of
interest along the way and essential information on planning a cruise, using
locks and so on.
Highly recommended for the enthusiast and anyone who wants coverage of almost
all the English waterways.
There is also a folding map available covering all the waterways which is useful for providing an overall view of the waterways when planning a cruise, and for locating canals in relation to major roads (the scale is 7 miles to the inch)
There is an independently run update service for these guides available on the web to enable you to keep you books up to date at all times.
PEARSON'S
CANAL COMPANIONS: These guide books are presented as guides to the individual
cruising routes most often mentioned in the "hire boat" brochures.
Contain a good number of full colour illustrations and a very informative text
describing the route as well as full detail of canal side facilities and the
nearby surrounds. The maps are hand drawn rather than Ordnance survey, and as
such are perhaps easier to follow if new to the canals. I always use these
along side the Nicholson guides as both offer a different slant to the same
subject.
PHILIP'S
NAVIGATOR ATLAS: This is intended as the ultimate in British road atlas's
covering the entire country at 1½ miles to the inch. For the devotee to the
Inland waterways it is however indispensable whether you are exploring on foot
or by boat. It shows individual locks and all roads and tracks. It is therefore
invaluable when trying to find access to the canal by road or when afloat
finding "civilization" if disaster strikes and you find yourself
stranded in the middle of nowhere. Thoroughly recommended!
THE
INLAND WATERWAYS OF FRANCE - by Edwards/May: An all encompassing book about
the French waterways. Maps, distances, dimensions , navigation authorities &
information. I have not however read this one myself.
MAP
OF THE INLAND WATERWAYS OF FRANCE: Just as it says a fold out map (suitable
for cruise planning).
IRELANDS
INLAND WATERWAYS -by Ruth Delaney: I am told this is as good as it gets as a
descriptive book, but more help is needed for planning your cruise - again I
have yet to see this one myself. Ms Delaney does also have other titles about
the Irish waterways in print, try the search engine!
