CANAL REFERENCE BOOKS - A
RECOMMENDED LIST
(click on links to find more titles)
INLAND
WATERWAYS MANUAL: A comprehensive practical guide to boating. Offers step by
step advice on boat handling skills, working through locks, tunnels and moveable
bridges. It also contains clear advice on choosing and buying a boat, basic
maintenance and trail boating. Its clear instructions and helpful diagrams make
this an ideal introduction to the delights of canal and river boating.
INLAND
WATERWAYS OF GREAT BRITAIN- by Jane Cumberlege: First published in 1904 and continually updated,
this
book has always remained to many peoples mind the definitive reference book of
the waterways since then. It has comprehensive details of over 300 waterways
with maps, distance tables and photographs. A must for the canalaholics bookshelf.
NARROW
BOATS - by Nick Billingham: A
thorough grounding is provided in this book in all aspects of looking after the
various systems that make up a narrow boat. Proper installation and maintenance
of these systems is vital for safe and enjoyable cruising. It will enable all
narrow boat owners to keep equipment in good working order.
HADFIELDS
BRITISH CANALS- revised by Joseph Boughey: If Inland Waterways of Great
Britain is the definitive reference book of the canals, then this must be
the standard for anyone interested in their history. It is if you like the
"Rise and Fall of the Canal Empire" only in this case, it also goes on
to bring the story up to date with details of today's pleasure boating and the
history of the 20th century as well as its renowned coverage of the "Canal
age" It is a book for the enthusiast rather than the casual browser, but I
would recommend it to anyone with an interest in why the canals developed as
they did. If you fall into this category you may also be interested in CHARLES
HADFIELD, CANAL MAN AND MORE - by Boughey, Hadfield and Sonia Rolt: This
tells the life story of Charles Hadfield who died in 1996. He was a man of many
parts, and while obviously giving wide coverage of his love of canals, it also
tells us about the man himself. Part biography and part autobiography, it is an
intriguing read.
SCOTLAND'S
INLAND WATERWAYS - by P G Ransom: A book covering an area long neglected. At
present there is much restoration taking place on the Scottish system including
the Millennium
Link. which will include the spectacular Millennium Wheel lift to join the
two canals. This book covers the canals ,rivers and lochs which once formed an
essential part of Scotland's industry and transport and provides the historic
background to today's extensive restoration projects.
